The worst part of being a parent

November 30th, 2004 by annie

Another local kid died in a car accident over the weekend. He was involved in a lot of the same activities as my kids over the years, scouts, hockey- but he was older (20) so I didn’t know him personally, although his sister is in Andy’s class. I know his mom just in passing, enough to nod hello when we’d see each other. But it’s all close enough. I can’t stop crying. It’s the fear. This happens much too often, and there’s nothing you can do to stop it.

We promise them we’ll take care of them, make sure nothing happens, but in the end, we can’t keep those promises. As much as we want to, we simply can’t.

I know what you mean. I still worry when Eric drives, and he’s had his license almost 3 years. Two tickets, one (relatively) minor accident.

These things always hit home a bit harder during the Holidaze. Sorry to hear about it.

~sad indeed, my thoughts/prayers go out to the family…it reminded me of good friend of mine when I was growing up in high school, Melanie, who was killed by a drunk driver as a group of us walked home from a high school football game along a windy stretch of road…it was a senseless act, a horrid moment, one that was never expected nor anticipated, but one that caused a ton of hurt…the only good to come out of that night was police catching the guy who fled the scene and regular patrols on that stretch of road…~
