Wintry Mix

Monday, February 26th, 2007

It snowed, but not much, and we had about a half inch of slush on the driveway this morning, with clear roads. So I shoved a walking path from the road to the front porch (which the mail carrier & UPS guy ignore as they always walk through the front lawn) and headed out on my day in the car.

Spent about an hour at Andy’s doctor (20 minutes away from here) and an hour at Tim’s (12 or so minutes away.) Had a little lunch, ran a few necessary errands, then zipped up to Ramapo to drop Andy off then back home, about 2 more hours total in the car. Made a few phone calls that couldn’t wait, brewed up a new pot of coffee, supervised Tim doing some homework that should have been done already, and sat here to chill for a half hour before I get dinner thrown together and get ready for a scout pack meeting tonight.

I don’t know how people who do stuff like this daily manage. It makes me appreciate my stay-at-home-ness. I do know that if I drove like this more, I’d need a better car. Ol’ Bessy is hangin’ in there but I was seriously eying the assorted RX330s and even Siennas that were passing me by.

Since I know I have at least a few more of these days ahead (starting, um, Wednesday) I’m thinking maybe I should start haunting the many used pre-loved certified previously owned car lots that have sprung up along the highway.

Snow day (again).
No field trip in the icy cold (yay!)
Had a nice Valentines evening watching Tivo’d stuff with the family.
Interesting developments pending on a few fronts, so things are looking up.

More to come!

Happy Valentines Day!

Wednesday, February 14th, 2007

lilheart.jpg Happy Valentines Day! Mine started off nicely indeed when I got a very sweet & special email from my guy (sorry, the details are private! And git yer minds out the gutter, yo.)

We got our snow day. Or rather, ice day. It’s mostly sleeting, in fact the poor dog came back in the house with little ice pellets stuck in her fur. She went straight to the heating vent when I let her in. The wind is blowing pretty hard, too.

Unfortunately Pat had to go into work for a big internet conference (now, for me, I think, we have internet. Why not do the internet conference from here?) But I guess a bunch of NJ people had to actually be in a room together for this one. Besides, don’t want the Swedes and Germans involved to think the wussy Americans couldn’t get the job done because of a little ice storm!

Tim & Nick are hanging out happily. Nick on the internet in the other room, Tim watching the Tivo’d Westminster Dog Show. I’ll join him in a little while, just hanging out and watching the doggies run around.

Yay, snow.

It’s supposed to snow tonight, then again tomorrow. Friday and Monday are school holidays, so if we’re lucky this could turn out to be a 6 day weekend.

And the timing couldn’t be better.

I’m having one of those days, can’t seem to focus or sit still. I lasted a total of 9 minutes on the treadmill. Even for me, that’s pretty bad. In my defense I’d already spent 15 minutes trying to figure out how to get it back out of metric mode from when Pat used it last (I ended up calling him and he walked me through it.)
I’ve started 4 or 5 different projects and completed… one. And that was just making a list of things I want to for a different project, so I don’t know that it counts.

Refuse to Choose!: A Revolutionary Program for Doing Everything That You LoveI’ve got this book on order- Refuse to Choose!: A Revolutionary Program for Doing Everything That You Love by Barbara Sher. The description seems to fit me to a T- except I wonder if there’s not a bit of ADD in me as well. I’m looking forward to forcing myself to read through it and see if it makes a difference.

Maybe it’s simply cabin fever. With some hormonal stuff mixed in I’m sure.

Whatever it is, I hope it passes soon.

a little snow

Tagging from my friend Bluegrass Mama’s post last week about how much snow it takes to close school

This is what we woke up to this morning. It’s just enough to coat the driveway- you can see Pat’s tire tracks. Not enough to make it worth dragging out a shovel, or even a broom. The road is completely clear.

Nick went off as usual to the bus stop at 7:30, and about 5 minutes later my neighbor called to let me know there’s a 2 hour delayed opening. So Pat rescued him from the cold (currently… 8 degrees.)

The problem around here is that we use a 3 tiered busing system. First the buses do the high school run, then the middle school, finally the elementary. The high school run is early, kids are picked up between 6:40 and 7 or so, and the school itself is up in the “mountains” which do get snowier and icier. So at the slightest hint of a slippery surface, the HS delays it’s opening because of safety concerns. Of course, the parents of HS kids can generally still head off to work and depend on the kids to get themselves onto the bus when it shows up.

But because of the domino effect, when there is a delay the elementary school buses don’t pick up till around 10:15 or so. Now for me, it’s not a big deal. I don’t have a job I need to be at. But for the vast majority of parents, it’s a huge PITA. It’s hard enough to take time of when your child is sick, but try to explain to the boss and coworkers who not only got to work on time, but found the roads clear sailing, that you’ll be late because of the weather?

If it was a rare occurrence maybe it would fly. But this is the second time within 2 weeks.
